The outbreak of monkeypox virus (mpox) with currently more than 85,400 confirmed infections worldwide outside the endemic areas in West and Central Africa and to date 3,676 confirmed infections in Germany (as of 31.1.2023) is exceptional and worrisome in scale, spread and dynamics. On July 23, 2022, the World Health Organization declared the current outbreak a “Public Health Emergency of International Concern” (PHEIC). In its press release of 21.6.2022, the German Standing Committee on Vaccination (STIKO) recommended the use of the Modified Vaccinia Ankara vaccine from Bavarian Nordic (MVA-BN) as vaccination for MSM with changing sexual partners, for personnel in special laboratories with contact to mpox, and as post-exposure prophylaxis.

In our study SEMVAc we analyze the Safety and Effectiveness of MVA-BN vaccination against mpox infection in at-risk individuals in Germany.
